Elmhirst's Resort

  • 16-ounce craft beer
  • 1000 feet in the air
  • 100 miles of cottage scenery

You arrive at the cottage early that afternoon and immediately head down to the lake to take in the view from your private dock. Famished, you grab a bite and a pint at the resort’s Wild Blue Yonder Pub. Next up--a canoe ride. You paddle along the shoreline, your eyes trained for signs of wildlife. The sun is warm. What better way to cool off than with a dip in the lake. The afternoon winds down. Dinner plans are made at the resort’s Hearthside Dining Room. The meal is exquisite; the produce--locally grown; the wine--a boutique selection from the cellar. The next morning you grab your camera and head down to the seaplane dock. You climb aboard, buckle up and prepare for takeoff. The plane’s engine roars to life. The plane’s pontoons skim across the water and then... you’re airborne. The view of Rice Lake and its many islands expand below. The pilot recounts the history of the area and points out the heronry, the bald eagle aerie, the Serpent Mound Burial Grounds and the Trent Severn Waterway. You can’t help but think that “taking off for cottage country” has a whole new meaning now.
