Push off for a four-day bike tour along the famous Icefields Parkway through two National Parks in Alberta. For roughly 300 kilometres between the towns of Jasper and Banff you will be surrounded by non-stop mountain splendor, waterfalls, glaciers and wildlife. The journey starts in Jasper with 3.5 days of riding the rolling wide-shouldered highway to Banff. While your guide shuttles your luggage in the support van, you are free to travel at your own pace through the incredible scenery. Stop at waterfalls where milky blue water crowds through the narrow chasms; stand at the base of dozens of glaciers and massive icefields. Drift down a 15 kilometre downhill stretch and battle to the top of two challenging passes. Stop for pictures of lazing bighorn sheep or keep pedaling as you pass a bear munching on bushes alongside the road. Riding the Icefields Parkway is the ultimate cycling adventure and you can do it!

Weather

  • The long brilliant days of summer offer visitors lots of daylight to explore the mountains and communities in Jasper and Banff National Park, but the mornings and evenings can be cool and seasonal storms can arrive unexpectedly. The summer months can also see snow so cold weather precautions should be taken any time of the year. Winter is definitely cooler with an abundance of snow.
  • Spring (April – May) still has a large volume of snow falling but the daily temperature is warming up. April’s average daytime temperature is 4C and May is 8C. Warmer coats, gloves and boots are advised.
  • Summer days (June to August) are long with daytime temperatures reaching highs of 15 C and cooling in the evenings to 5 C. Less than 10 cm of rain is expected each month but it can be misty. So always bring sun protection, a sweater and rain protection.
  • November through March expect lots of snow (up to 2.6 metres) and an average temperature of -10C.

Visitor information
  • A moderate level of fitness is recommended for this journey. Assistance is always just around the corner or waiting at the next scenic lookout parking lot.
  • Bring your own well-maintained road or touring bike, or rent a performance bike from the operator. An electric pedal assist bike is also available.
  • Most climbs are gradual at an average of 4 - 5%. There are only two high passes, but a strong attitude will get you to the top.  
  • A safety meeting prior to the ride will cover all aspects of the road including traffic, wildlife encounters and rest stops. There is no cellular service between Jasper and Banff but two-way radios will be provided to the group to stay in contact with the guide. A satellite phone is in the van for emergencies.  All guides are professional and first aid certified.

When to go
  • The cycling tours are offered late May through September.
  • The weather in the mountains is unpredictable with localized conditions that can change quickly, because of this tours run rain or shine. In case of extreme weather conditions, the itinerary may be modified. As a seasoned road cyclist you'll bring proper attire that will be available in the van.
  • Arrive in Edmonton a few days early to enjoy cycling the mighty North Saskatchwan River valley or one of their many festivals.
  • Consider adding a few days at the end of your tour to relax in Banff or Canmore where more adventures like the Canmore Cave tours and the Norquay Via Ferrata are out your front door.  
  • Arrangements can be made to have you return to the Calgary International Airport.
Need to know
  • The tours are fully supported by a van and trailer.  
  • High-end rental bikes are available or you can bring your own bike.
  • Daily distances average 90 km. If an uphill segment is too challenging, the van will help you on your way. The downhill segments are very rewarding.
  • Bring your camera to capture the adventure and warm layers to remove or add during scheduled stops with the van. Snacks and water are always available during the ride
